WindsorONE: A Complete Guide to Its Mouldings and Trim Boards
WindsorONE is a premium line of primed wood trim made in California. Inside the house, it is known for moulding collections designed around historic architectural styles, with crisp, deep profiles that match from casing to crown. Outside, its Protected trim boards are treated against rot and insects all the way through and carry a 30 year limited warranty.
What is WindsorONE?
WindsorONE is a brand of factory primed trim, sold through professional lumberyards and specialty millwork stores. The range has two sides:
- Interior mouldings. Casings, crowns, base, backbands, headers, window stools, chair rail, picture rail and caps, grouped into collections by architectural period so every piece in a room belongs together.
- Exterior trim boards. Flat boards from 1×2 to 2×10, plus shiplap and tongue and groove, in the WindsorONE Protected line for fascia, corner boards, porch ceilings and column wraps.
Every piece arrives clear, straight and primed, ready for paint.
WindsorONE mouldings: designed by period style
Most moulding catalogs are a list of unrelated profiles. WindsorONE designs its mouldings as complete sets, each based on a style of American architecture, so the casing, header, backband, base and crown in a room share the same proportions and details. The interior collections include:
- Classical Craftsman. Historically accurate trim for houses built between about 1900 and 1930: flat casings, heavy headers and simple, strong lines.
- Classical Colonial and Colonial Revival. Layered casings, ogee crowns and backbands in the tradition of early American and revival homes.
- Greek Revival. Broad, formal profiles with the bold shadow lines of the 1820s to 1850s.
- Beaded Casing. Casings with a single or double bead, a detail that suits farmhouse and cottage interiors.
- Simple Clean Flat Stock. Square edged trim for modern and transitional rooms.
- Caps and Federal Panel. Wainscot caps and panel mouldings for walls and ceilings.
- Designed by Brent Hull. A collection created with the historic millwork specialist Brent Hull.
What you notice when you hold a piece is the detail. The edges are sharp and crisp, the incisions are deep, and the fillets, the small flat steps between curves, are wide enough to read clearly once painted. Trim with shallow profiles tends to blur under two coats of paint. WindsorONE profiles keep their shadow lines.
We carry a wide selection from these collections, including the CS001 Gage Casing, the HC001 Steph Header, the BB001 Klindt Backband, six crowns including the CM001 Daniel Crown and the CM005 Ogee Crown, and window stools such as the WS001 Oakley. Browse all of them in our WindsorONE moulding collection.
What is WindsorONE made of?
Radiata pine. It is a fast growing plantation pine, and WindsorONE sources it from managed forests in Chile. At the mill, scanners find the knots and defects, saws cut them out, and the clear pieces that are left are finger jointed back together into long lengths. The wood is then planed, shaped and given three coats of 100% acrylic latex primer in the factory.
The result is trim with no knots to bleed through paint and very little twist or bow, which is why finish carpenters like it: long runs go up straight, and miters close tight.
Is WindsorONE finger jointed?
Yes. Finger jointing is how the mill removes every knot and still delivers long, straight, stable lengths. The glued joints disappear under the factory primer and paint.
Because of the joints and the primer, WindsorONE is made for painted trim. If you would like stained trim, we carry solid hardwood mouldings in species such as alder, poplar and oak. Our painted vs stained trim guide walks through that choice.
Who makes WindsorONE, and where is it located?
WindsorONE is made by Windsor Mill, a Northern California company that Ray Flynn founded in 1972. The company is based in Sonoma County, with offices in Petaluma. Its products are milled in two plants in the United States: Willits, in Mendocino County, about two and a half hours north of the Bay Area, and Surry, Virginia. For our customers, that means trim made close to home.
WindsorONE Protected: the exterior boards and the 30 year warranty
For the outside of the house, WindsorONE makes its Protected line. The boards are treated through the whole thickness, not only the surface, against fungal decay, termites and mold. Cutting, planing or sanding a board does not expose unprotected wood, so field cuts only need primer.
The manufacturer’s installation manual sets out three warranty terms for Protected boards:
| What is covered | Warranty on Protected boards |
|---|---|
| Fungal decay (rot) and termite damage | 30 years |
| Glued finger joint failure | 10 years |
| Primer peeling | 5 years |
The warranty covers the first owner, the boards need to be installed and maintained the way the manual describes, and a claim needs the original invoice and photos. Keep your receipt with your house papers.
Where Protected boards go
- Exterior trim. Fascia, rake boards, corner boards, window and door casing, frieze and band boards.
- Porch ceilings and soffits. Tongue and groove or shiplap overhead, where humidity and the occasional leak are part of life.
- Column and post wraps. A 1×12 or 5/4 board wrapped around a porch post, close to the deck where splash starts rot first.
- Garages, basements and covered steps. Spaces with no heat and plenty of damp.
- Bathrooms and laundry rooms. The Protected boards hold a Gold indoor air quality rating, so they work inside too.
How WindsorONE Protected compares for exterior trim
| WindsorONE Protected | Cedar | PVC trim | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rot protection | Treated through the board, 30 year limited warranty | Natural resistance in the heartwood, less in sapwood | Does not rot |
| Knots | None | Depends on grade | None |
| Arrives ready to paint | Yes, three coat factory primer | No, needs priming on all sides | Paint optional, some colors restricted |
| Look and feel | Real wood, crisp milled edges | Real wood, visible grain | Plastic, smooth |
| Tools and fasteners | Standard woodworking tools and nails | Standard woodworking tools and nails | Needs specific fasteners and room for expansion |
For anyone who wants the look and workability of real wood on the outside of a house, with a written warranty behind it, WindsorONE Protected is a strong choice.
Install rules for exterior boards
These are the points from the manufacturer’s manual that matter most, both for the life of the trim and for the warranty:
- Prime every cut. Field cuts and ends get primer before the board goes up.
- Paint it soon. Two coats of 100% acrylic latex exterior paint, ideally within 90 days and no later than one year after installation. Factory primer is not a finish coat.
- Keep it off the ground. At least 6 inches above grade, 2 inches above roofs and decks, and a 1/4 inch gap above flashing.
- Use the right nails. Stainless steel or galvanized, long enough to reach 1 1/4 inches into solid wood. No. 316 stainless near the coast.
- Land joints on framing. On runs over 16 feet, leave a 1/8 inch gap at the joint and seal it with exterior caulk.
- Add an air space over rigid foam. Use furring strips rather than nailing trim straight over foam insulation.
WindsorONE at The Moulding Company
- Interior mouldings from the period collections: casings, headers, backbands, crowns, base shoe, base cap, chair rail, picture rail, cove, stops, caps and window stools, in our WindsorONE moulding collection.
- Protected 1x trim boards from the 1×2 for stops and battens, through the 1×4 for casing and corner boards and the 1×6 for frieze and water table, up to the 1×12 for column wraps and skirt boards.
- Protected 5/4 and 2x boards for thicker fascia, corner boards and porch posts, from 5/4×6 up to 2×10.
- Shiplap and tongue and groove for porch ceilings, soffits and walls.
Boards come smooth on all four sides (S4S) or with one smooth face and a textured back (S1S2E), in lengths that vary by size. The 1×6, for example, comes in 8, 10, 16 and 20 foot lengths. Our board size guide lists the actual milled size of every board.
Is WindsorONE worth it?
Yes, when the trim matters to the room or has to stand up to the weather. Inside, you get period accurate profiles with real depth that match from floor to ceiling, on stock that goes up straight and paints cleanly.
