5/4×8 Board
Our nominal 5/4×8 boards are part of the 5/4x range and are stocked in 3 species: MDF, Poplar, and Sage FJP.
Actual size is not the same in every material. All 5/4×8 boards measure 7 1/4″ wide, but thickness runs 1″ and 1 1/16″ depending on which species you pick. The table on this page lists the exact milled size for each one. It is worth checking before you cut, and it matters a great deal if you are butting two materials together in the same run. Our board size guide explains why nominal sizes and actual sizes differ in the first place.
5/4x, said “five quarter”, sits between 1x boards and 2x boards. It gives you more substance than a 1x without the bulk of a 2x, which is why it has long been the traditional choice for stair treads, window stools and shelving that needs to carry weight without sagging.
If this width is not quite right, 5/4×6 boards are the next size down and 5/4×10 boards the next size up.
