Three main pieces make up a door casing—two longer pieces (side casing), and one shorter piece (head casing). You may have also heard door casings referred to as a “door frame” or simply “door trim,” but the casings themselves are how we refer to the trim as a whole. How Much Are Door Casings?
As with most things, the price of door casings tends to vary. It all depends on the style, how much material you’re purchasing, and whether or not you’re going to install it yourself. Most of the time, if you’re only updating one or two frames, door casings won’t burn a big hole in your pocket. But if you’re replacing the casings throughout your entire home, expect to shell out a few hundred dollars (or more).

Are Door Casings Easy to Install?
We get this question a lot, but the answer is almost always “yes—if you have the right tools.” As a homeowner, most of the time, you’ll likely have your contractor doing this kind of installation work for you, and you won’t have to worry about the details. But if you like putting in a bit of elbow grease and DIY skills, you can absolutely replace your own door casings.
We recommend visiting YouTube for some great tutorials, but you’ll quickly learn it only take a few tools. You usually only need a miter saw, adhesive, nails, caulk, and a pencil and tape measure for measuring. You may also need a blade to help remove the previous trim more easily.
How Do I Paint Door Casings?
Unfortunately, slapping a coat of paint over old (or new) door casings isn’t exactly how it’s done. You’ll need to prep your trim, fill in any nail holes, sand it, and prime it to make sure it’s ready for a coat of paint. Your painting steps may also change depending on the material you’re using for your trim pieces—specifically natural wood.
