Your Top Questions About Door Casings Answered
Whether you’re designing a new home or you’re looking to breathe a little life into your old home, your trim and door casings may not be on the top of your priority list. But we’re here to tell you that making small changes to your door frame or trim pieces can make a world of difference in your home’s interior design.
If you can’t tell by our name, we consider ourselves moulding experts here at The Moulding Company. This is why you can trust us to answer the biggest questions you may have about door casings.
First Things First… What Are Door Casings?
Door casings are the frames or trim around your doorways. From a functional standpoint, casings are there to conceal the transition between rooms so that the wall and jamb aren’t exposed. Aesthetically, they can help set the tone for the design in your home.
Three main pieces make up a door casing—two longer pieces (side casing), and one shorter piece (head casing). You may have also heard door casings referred to as a “door frame” or simply “door trim,” but the casings themselves are how we refer to the trim as a whole. Common Questions We Hear About Door Casings
We get a lot of questions about various types of trim. Our goal is not only to answer your questions but to help remove any stress you may have from shopping the plethora of moulding options you have. Let us make choosing or updating your door casings that much more simple for you!
How Much Are Door Casings?
As with most things, the price of door casings tends to vary. It all depends on the style, how much material you’re purchasing, and whether or not you’re going to install it yourself. Most of the time, if you’re only updating one or two frames, door casings won’t burn a big hole in your pocket. But if you’re replacing the casings throughout your entire home, expect to shell out a few hundred dollars (or more).
Luckily, here in California, The Moulding Company is your best resource for affordable pricing on door casing materials and other trim pieces that’s much better than your local big box store. You’ll find that our trim and moulding prices are reasonable, plus you’ll be getting a much more personalized buying experience. We even offer free delivery on orders over $200!
Are Door Casings Easy to Install?
We get this question a lot, but the answer is almost always “yes—if you have the right tools.” As a homeowner, most of the time, you’ll likely have your contractor doing this kind of installation work for you, and you won’t have to worry about the details. But if you like putting in a bit of elbow grease and DIY skills, you can absolutely replace your own door casings.
We recommend visiting YouTube for some great tutorials, but you’ll quickly learn it only take a few tools. You usually only need a miter saw, adhesive, nails, caulk, and a pencil and tape measure for measuring. You may also need a blade to help remove the previous trim more easily.
How Do I Paint Door Casings?
Unfortunately, slapping a coat of paint over old (or new) door casings isn’t exactly how it’s done. You’ll need to prep your trim, fill in any nail holes, sand it, and prime it to make sure it’s ready for a coat of paint. Your painting steps may also change depending on the material you’re using for your trim pieces—specifically natural wood.
We have a video that we always recommend people watch that explains how to properly prep their trim for painting or installation. Watch it below or at the link here.
